25 KM

Saturday, September 21 2019 - Whistler Alpine Meadows

Date: Saturday, Sept 21, 2019
Distance: 25 km / 15.5 miles
Ascent: 750 m / 2400 ft
Descent: 750 m / 2400 ft

For 2019 we’ll be using the same 25k course as we did in 2018, meaning runners will be mostly on the Comfortably Numb trail network via a single loop course that starts and finishes at the Riverside Resort. The route this year will be run in the opposite direction to which we ran in 2018, so this is technically a first time course for us.

Comfortably Numb is an internationally famous trail that was credited with “Epic Ride Status”, shortly after its completion in 2006, by the International Mountain Bicycling Association, and it’s even more fun to run! Prior to this recognition only 37 trails from around the globe had ever received such a designation, and just three of those were in Canada.

The 25k route has 750 meters / 2400 feet of climbing and descent, which doesn’t seem like a lot at first blush, but don’t be fooled, it’s all run over highly technical terrain, and even the speediest of runners won’t break the two hour barrier for this one. The race is made tougher still by the fact that we are only able to provide a single aid station, at 19 kms into the route, so runners will have to take good care of themselves and be self supported for the majority of their day.

The Comfortably Numb route offers magnificent views over Green Lake and Whistler Mountain, via stunning rock bluffs about mid-way through the course. Further along runners get to enjoy crossing a bridge high above Wedge Creek, amongst a forest of large moss encrusted trees. It’s truly a magical area and an annual run route for many a local. You’ll get a little bit of everything in this race and once you see the caliber of the route you’ll understand why it took a full eight years to complete this trail, from initial concept on through to spanning the Wedge Creek with a brilliant bridge above the raging rapids below.

10 Essentials: Although all our courses are excellently marked, you can never predict what can happen during a race. We recommend learning about the 10 essentials for backcountry safety and bringing them in your running pack. Learn more about the 10 essentials in this article by North Shore Rescue.

All CMTS races are now cup free events, meaning you’ll need to pack along your own source for fluids at aid stations and at the finish line. Here are two suggestions: A packable style bottle, or a homemade version in which you simply lop the top off of an empty kids juicebox.
