Sky Pilot Rappel Course Info Page. Please read in its entirety!
Limited to just 50 people in first year.
Distance is same as the current long course, 23km. Aid stations in the same place. Race cost will be $25 more than the long course option as we need to employ a guide team to oversee everything and this is to cover those additional race costs.
Must already your own helmet, harness, belay device, sling, caribiners, and these items must be carried with you throughout the race.
You must have relevant climbing and ropes experience already. This will not be your first rappel. You must have completed a rappel course at some point in time and you must provide proof of this, either in written form or via an actual signed document from a climbing gym or guide.
There will only be two rappel ropes, mid and back of the pack runners can expect some delays. The reason we are limiting the number of runners this year is so that we can assess how much runner traffic the rappel site can handle without an unacceptably long wait time.
1) Whistle 2) Space blanket 3) Buff or toque 4) Gloves 5) Long sleeve wind jacket 6) Cell phone 7) Lighter or matches 8) Headlamp or flashlight 9) Printed course map (please print your own copy) 10) 600 calories 11) Ability to carry two litres of water.
Helmets must be worn from the start of the "climbers trail climb" at approximate KM 10 until the completion of the rappel at approximate KM 12
*This course will only happen if weather conditions allow for it. If weather is inclement, all rappel course runners will run an abbreviated long course, dependent on what is determined safe by Search and Rescue on the day. No refunds can or will be offered if race day conditions necessitate running anything other than the course you've signed up for. Climbing guides will still need to be contracted, paid and on site regardless of whether the weather cooperates or not.
For 2017: 1) We will offer discounted rappel courses via Mountain Skills Academy & Adventures, to be hosted in Squamish, so that people with no current experience can join in on the fun.
